the process
the process
From the moment you reach out to us here at Foster Wales Cardiff, your journey is in motion. We’ll guide you through the process to becoming a foster carer with plenty of information and support. Here’s what you can expect.
the first step
It all begins with an initial enquiry. As soon as you pick up the phone or send us an email, your journey has begun.
the home visit
Once you have gotten in touch with us, we’ll start the process of getting to know you with a visit to your home. If this isn’t possible, we’ll start with a video call. During this period, it’s important that we build up a relationship with you. We’ll want to start to understand the people that matter most to you and discover where you call home.
the training
During the first stage of your training and development, you’ll be taught more about fostering, so you can be sure that it’s the right choice for you. This initial training course is called “Preparation to Foster”, or “Skills to Foster”. This takes place over a few days or evenings. These early stages are all about building knowledge, connections and long- lasting valuable networks.
This is a great chance to compare notes with other foster carers who are starting out at the same time as you. Our “Skills to Foster” training is delivered by one of our experienced foster families which will give you a real insight into the experience of being a foster carer.
the assessment
Don’t worry, this isn’t a test. It’s simply an opportunity for us to find out about you and your family.
Fostering is truly a family effort and the more we know, the better we can ensure that any child you care for is best matched with your family, and can benefit from your unique skills, insights and ways of working.
You can also use it as a time to chat through any questions or concerns you have. Our assessments consider the strengths and vulnerabilities of your whole family unit and these are carried out by our Foster Wales Cardiff team.
the panel
This is where the assessment is considered by a group of experienced panel members, who make recommendations to suit your family situation.
Panel members at Foster Wales Cardiff include social care workers and independent members. Each member is experienced and knowledgeable. They’re there to ensure we’re doing right by the young people who need it most.
the foster care agreement
Once the panel has approved your assessment, the foster care agreement sets out everything it means to be a foster carer. This includes your daily responsibilities which you’ve committed to, and the guidance and wider support you’ll receive as part of your huge commitment.
The agreement also covers all of the services and expertise we’ll offer you as your support network.
