At Foster Wales Cardiff, we believe in the power of people—those who open their hearts and homes to young people in need. Today, we’re proud to share the incredible story of Adey, a young person supported by Cardiff Council’s Supported Lodgings service, whose journey has inspired many and recently earned her national recognition.
Adey arrived in the UK from Eritrea at just 16 years old, facing unimaginable challenges and uncertainty. Alone in a new country, she was placed into care and welcomed into the home of a Supported Lodgings provider—someone who offered not just a room, but stability, kindness, and hope.
Through the King’s Trust Explore programme, Adey began to thrive. She built friendships, gained confidence, and set ambitious goals for her future. Her determination and growth were celebrated at the prestigious King’s Trust and TK Maxx & Homesense Awards, where she won the Delta Air Lines Breakthrough Award. The ceremony, hosted by Ant & Dec, was a star-studded affair—and Adey was personally congratulated by His Majesty the King at Buckingham Palace.
Adey’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when young people are given the right support. It’s also a testament to the life-changing impact of Supported Lodgings—a service that provides safe, nurturing environments for young people aged 16–21 who are unable to live at home.
