Things to do with the kids this summer holiday

With the children off school for summer, it’s not always easy to keep them entertained without breaking the bank. So, we’ve found lots of family friendly things to do with the kids this Summer holiday in Cardiff, that the kids will love – and so will your purse.

National Museum Cardiff

Here you’ll find meteorites, fossils and the famous dinosaur skeletons, a humpback whale skeleton alongside hundreds of other creatures, plus paintings, statues and ceramics from some of the world’s most famous artists in the art galleries. Cardiff Bay Barrage

Cardiff Bay Barrage is perfect to take kids on their bikes or scooters, situated in a stunning maritime setting with spectacular views over the Severn Estuary. There are also a number of educational trails and information points which provide an insight into the history of the Bay, such as an account of Captain Scott’s journey to the Antarctic. Mid way across the barrage is a children’s pirate-themed play area, skate park and toilet facilities.

Fforest Fawr Sculpture Trail, Tongwynlais

The woodlands around Castell Coch are a beautiful area to explore. The sculpture trail takes children on a magical journey through the forest, as well as there being other trails for walking and cycling. You can tie it in with a visit to Castell Coch, although admission charges apply. 

Cardiff Castle

Cardiff Castle is one of Wales’ leading heritage attractions and a site of international significance, walk through our gates and you will discover a story 2,000 years in the making. St Fagans National History Museum, Cardiff

The open air museum brings to life the history of the Welsh people with over 100 buildings reconstructed on the site, including a Victorian school, a row of Valleys mining cottages, a chapel and farm houses. Summer young composers course 2023

Are you an aspiring young musician aged 14-18? Do you want to develop your skills in composition, instrumentation and arranging?

In conjunction with the Cardiff Classical Series at St David’s Hall, this term’s Arts Active Young Composers course will focus on learning to compose for a percussion ensemble. You will be working alongside professional musicians and guided by composer Will Frampton.

At the end of this FREE four-day course, you will be able to hear your composition played live by the musicians. The performance will be recorded and sent out for you to keep and include in any portfolio you may be building for school or university.
