What is Supported Lodgings?

At Foster Wales Cardiff there are many different types of fostering and different roles carers can play, but if fostering is not right for you at this time, then you may want to consider becoming a supported lodgings host.

What is Supported Lodgings?

Our Supported Lodgings Hosts offer a spare room in their home to young people aged 16 to 21 who need support and guidance before they can live independently. Specifically, welcoming care leavers, young people in care, or homeless children 16/17 yr olds. Supported Lodgings is for young people that may not be ready to live on their own and need some guidance and assistance.

The support provided by our hosts includes:

  • Budgeting support
  • Managing laundry
  • Cooking skills
  • Applying for jobs and completing forms
  • Developing positive routines
  • Emotional support

Supported Lodgings is a positive way to help young people develop skills and confidence to enable them to live independently in the future. Most young people stay for about 6-12 months before moving on, but of course it can vary.

  • Looked After in Local Authority Care, aged 16 or 17
  • A care leaver, aged 16 – 21

Can I be a Supported Lodgings Host?

Anyone over 21 who lives in the Cardiff area and has a spare room can apply to become a Supported Lodgings Provider.

Being in full time work is not a barrier to taking part in the scheme. Whether you own your home or rent it will not affect your application. We welcome applications from all backgrounds, cultures, sexual orientation, genders, and marital status. The main criteria is that you can offer a safe environment and are willing to support a young person.

All our supported lodgings hosts are assessed and approved by the Local Authority. This will include medical and DBS checks.

The scheme is facilitated by our Supported Lodgings Team which is part of our Fostering Wales Cardiff Service.

Becoming a host can be an incredibly rewarding venture and truly makes a difference to the young people you support.

If you decide you’d like to know more, we can contact you to discuss the scheme, answer any queries and arrange a home visit should you wish to proceed further.
