Being part of a foster family is an experience that shapes not just the lives of the children who are in care but also the children in the fostering families themselves. They learn, grow, and find joy in the process of helping others, even through the challenges. Here are some reflections from children in fostering families, sharing their unique insights.
Rory, age 12, has had a few experiences with foster siblings, and he describes how the transitions, though difficult, come with a sense of fulfilment:
“Goodbyes can be hard, but as long as you know they are going to a safe home, it is okay.”
Saying goodbye can often be the most difficult part of fostering. Olivia, age 15, has been through a number of these moments but finds comfort in the idea that goodbyes aren’t always final:
“Some goodbyes are harder than others, but we like to think of it as a ‘see you soon’ rather than goodbye. I do get upset when our babies move on, but I love seeing them again in a few weeks with their birth family or adoptive family.”
For Rory, age 12, being part of a fostering family brings company into the home and makes him feel good:
“I like being in a fostering family. It’s quite quiet with me and my mum, so it’s good to have company around the house, and I get a good feeling when you do something good to help others.”
Fostering can also be a source of pride and excitement. Benjamin, age 12, loves sharing his fostering journey with his friends:
“I tell my friends that we have a new baby or child to look after. My friends think it’s cool that I always have foster brothers and sisters at home.”
And when welcoming a new child, there are simple, yet meaningful ways to make them feel at home. Helen, age 11, shares her tips:
“You can welcome a child by getting them toys to play with when they arrive, being friendly, helping to show them their bedroom and around the house, and sharing your parents with them.”
These children remind us of the resilience, compassion, and warmth that comes with being part of a fostering family. Their experiences show that fostering not only provides safety and care for vulnerable children but also teaches valuable lessons about love and support to everyone involved.
